This report highlights a mental health crisis within the skilled trades, where nearly half of workers rate their well-being as "fair" or "poor" due to high stress, physical pain, and job instability. A significant link is identified between workplace injuries and substance use, with many members self-medicating to manage chronic pain or psychological distress. Despite the availability of union supports, a persistent culture of "toughness" and social stigma prevent the majority of workers from seeking help. To address these challenges, the report calls for a shift toward treating mental health with the same urgency as physical safety, recommending enhanced addiction awareness, ergonomic improvements to reduce injury-related drug use, and industry-wide efforts to normalize help-seeking behaviors.
