The purpose of this legislation is to ensure the implementation of equal rights for women and men enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania, and to prohibit any type of discrimination on grounds of sex, in particular by reference to marital or family status. The law created a legal obligation for state institutions to create strategic plans to ensure equal opportunities for women and men; and for municipal institutions to take measures aimed at ensuring equal opportunities for women and men in municipal strategic development and/or municipal strategic action plans.
